Verizon asked us to create a messaging app that was specifically for Verizon phones. They wanted it to be one of a kind, where the user would actually use this service over the OEM installed app. To do this, we knew we needed to make an app that would be clean, easy to use with a couple of features that would set it apart from the pack. We put our heads together to create a simple and easy to use interface with the highlight experience being a thing we called a “shoebox” that was an aggregation of all attachments from one contact consolidated into one space. No longer were you spending time loading past texts to find the address for tomorrow night’s dinner.
The visual design was a departure from the heavy design Verizon tended to use, however it still maintained many of the iconic Verizon elements: Red header and gray gradient backgrounds. Verizon had an insistent brand team that would not consider changing these aesthetics. The resulting product was the first of the newest Message + generation and it received great reviews. I was the lead designer and created the ui and visual design templates for the new color palette, iconography, photography and ui elements.
